How To Find Medical Transcription Jobs from Home

What are medical transcription jobs?

A medical transcription job is a position that requires you to listen to a recording from a physician or other health professional and translate the audio to text quickly and accurately. A transcriber uses tools like a foot pedal and headset that allows them to listen to a recording and use the foot pedals to rewind, fast forward, slow down or speed up the sound while typing.

You can secure a job as a medical transcriber at a physician's office or from home. Working from home could entail working for one physician or institution, or it could mean working as a freelance transcriber for a variety of companies.

How to become a medical transcriber

Consider following these steps to become a medical transcriber:

1. Obtain a high school diploma or GED

A high school diploma or GED is required to become a medical transcriber. Start your transcriber career by obtaining a high school diploma or GED certificate.

2. Determine your typing speed

The faster your typing speed, the more money you can make from medical transcription. Forty words per minute (WPM) is a decent starting point, but you might consider increasing your typing speed to at least 80 WPM to be able to make more money. There are a variety of typing tests you can take online to determine your typing speed and programs to help you develop this skill.

3. Earn a medical transcription certificate

You can find a list of approved medical transcription programs from The Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI). Although a medical transcription certificate is optional, obtaining one will expand your knowledge and give you a competitive edge.

4. Learn medical terminology

The AHDI-approved certificate program will provide a lot of knowledge about medical terminology, but the more versed you are in medical terminology, the more efficient and valuable you'll be.

5. Obtain RHDS certification

There are two credentials you can obtain to become a medical transcriber. The first credential is the Registered Healthcare Documentation Specialist (RHDS) certification. This certification is offered to new medical transcribers with less than two years of experience in the field.

Training for the exam will provide you with best practices and medical terminology that you can practice. The RHDS examination tests your knowledge of the English language, grammar, punctuation and your basic understanding of medical terminology. Passing the exam will allow you to apply for jobs to gain experience.

6. Gain experience

To gain medical transcription experience, you can benefit from freelance transcription opportunities. You can also apply for a job in a medical center or a work-from-home job that uses a specific medical center. However, many of these institutions prefer to hire medical transcribers with more experience and transcribers who have obtained their Certified Healthcare Documentation Specialist (CHDS) certification.

7. Obtain CHDS certification

Once you have gained at least two years of experience, you can train and practice for your Certified Healthcare Documentation Specialist (CHDS) test. The CHDS examination tests your advanced knowledge of medical terminology and your ability to use professional reference materials. Gaining knowledge and experience from certificate programs and freelance transcription positions can help you achieve the knowledge and skills you need to pass this test.

8. Update your resume

Once you have passed the CHDS exam, you have everything you need to work as a certified healthcare documentation specialist, also known as a medical transcriptionist. Update your resume with your certificate program, transcription work experience and two professional AHDI-approved certifications. These additions to your resume can help you secure a job as a medical transcriptionist.
